11/01/2001 Entry: "11/01 Morning"

I finally forced myself to go to the dentist yesterday. I had not gone since I moved here last year as I don't have insurance. I am stunned and very upset at the news I received. It seems one of my teeth needs a root canal and crown, which will run approximately $1600 for the one tooth. Then I have tons of cavities too!! All in all I will be spending $2500 on my mouth! Can you believe it? I really considered just having that one tooth pulled instead as it's just a molar but was advised against it strongly as it could make my other teeth shift over time. My teeth are very straight, luckily, but very prone to decay. My dad's teeth had rotted out when he was 20 so I'm very lucky to even still have mine. My teeth look good though slightly yellow so I also checked into having them whitened, which would run $500 (which is too much), and this was before I saw the cost of my other stuff. Needless to say, I am sick about this. I wish Shawn and I were married so I would have the dental coverage. The bad thing is I cannot put off the root canal. I am having toothaches every day and have been for a couple weeks. So I really need to get it fixed. *big sigh* So much for my plan of having my credit card paid off by June.

My dentist recommended the crest whitening strips for whitening my teeth, they sell it at any drug store for $40 and it last for six months. I've heard it really works.

What can I say? Good luck, dear. I know dentist bills are a pain, but we need to take care of that. I'm sorry you're having toothaches :(

Oh man, that is a really bad deal. I've been going through the braces thing for the past year and a half...it definitely pays (no pun intended) to check around about pricing though. We saved around $2000 on my braces and my teeth are perfectly straight and I have no complaints. My teeth are also prone to decay, but my dentist gave me some flouride rinse (PerioMed) and although it tastes gross, it does work. Also, it is only $250 here to get your teeth whitened professionally...maybe it's the location factor, but I would definitely check around on the prices. :)

Leah I am so sorry to hear this. That really is ashame that it will cost that much. Tell that boy to marry you. LOL I have awful teeth. When I was 19 the dentist told me I had the teeth of a 40 year old. So at 47 you can imagine what they are. I am putting off getting dentures till next year. I really want to get the ones they actually wire to your jaw bones. I am sure it will cost me an arm and a leg. :)

Oh gosh, I am sorry Leah. Dental bills are a nightmare. Hope things find a way of working out ok.

I feel for ya! I had to have a root canal and a crown a couple of years ago... ran me $1700. And the best part is that it fell out a year later and I had to have it done all over again!

Word of advice... don't chew anything sticky with your crown! :)

OMG, $1600 for a root canal? That is crazy. I had one in 1999 and it only cost a little under $500 and that was before my work insurance brought it down even more for me.

You're dentist is a crook! LOL

Wow, Leah...I'm so sorry you're going through all this! sheesh! I really need to find a new dentist also (my dentist that I have seen for the last 15 years had to retire suddenly for health reasons)...cause I know I have cavities and need to fix it! UGH! Hugs!
