03/15/2002 Entry: "3/15/02 Business"

My business is coming along nicely. I applied for LLC (limited liability company) today and will have an answer by Monday. It looks like my business name was not taken, thank goodness.

I also got some leads on insurance for my candles, which wasn't easy to find. Most companies either didn't want to touch a candle business or it was too expensive. I'll know more by the end of next week.

I also applied for my merchant account today, which has already been preapproved. I'm hoping this means I'll for sure get it. I was referred to a company through my bank, and their rates are so reasonable.

I poured a few batches of candles today and they turned out perfect! I'm still testing wicks to make sure I'm getting a super burn and scent throw. So much to do and so little time, yet.

My candles are made out of soy wax, which is environmentally safe, biodegradable, and leaves little to no black soot on the jars or walls etc. This is a different type of candle wax than the ones you'll find in any store. They aren't cheap to make, but they burn so clean, that I think it will be worth it. I hope to have my line fully developed within a month or so.

I've been trying to decide whether to sell just wholesale or if I also want to sell retail. There are pros and cons to both. Wholesale will give me larger sales, of course, but retail would be a better profit per candle for me.

I'll also be carrying a line of lotions and shower gels. They are already done for the most part and those have been tested by family and friends, all of which love the product! All that is left for that is to find the waterproof labels. I have some leads and should have those done in 2 weeks or so.

So this is what I've been doing the past few weeks. I'll be really busy now perfecting my candles and creating labels. I want to do decorative labels instead of only having my logo on them.

Speaking of logos, I think I finally created one I like. I have my website started and hope to finish that within the month as well. I have my shopping cart all ready to go also. All I need to do is add my products and pictures.

Our wedding plans are coming along nicely. I'm not a big fan of shopping so I won't be going to tons of places. I went shopping with my maid of honor the other day to look for a dress for me and for bridesmaid dresses. I didn't find my dress, but I think I found the bridesmaid dresses. My maid of honor, Angie, is basically picking those out. Our tastes are very similiar and we both agreed on the one dress. I will be shopping again on April 5 to compare prices and to make sure I don't find something else I like better. I also hope to find my dress on that day. I will know it when I see it.

Shawn and I are going out to eat with friends tonight so I'm going to celebrate all my success with my business. Everything seems to be falling into place so nicely. Life is great right now!

The only downside is I've been feeling so stressed and nervous about the business details of my business. But after today, I feel so relieved!
